Schlesser is a tricky old warrior, lol. Giniel should perhaps have said “hello” to Schlesser’s fiberglass rear, with the front bumper of the VW, although I am sure Mr. Nissen, the VW Boss, would not approve of such a risk. Ha.
Anyway good stage for Dirk/Giniel. I hope he is feeling more healthy soon. Carry on, soldier.
I will be interested to hear Mark’s comments: He was very fast today through the checkpoints, but seems to have had some trouble at the very end of the stage.
Robby Gordon should have some very entertaining in-car video of today’s stage. Obviously he was flying out there today, started 78th, but had 15th best stage time…yikes. By my calculation he passed 50 cars on the road today. Maybe the fuel problems are solved now. He has a big hole to dig out of though!
Thanks Helge, for all your work to bring us these comments from Dirk.

I totally agree Wilhelm, Mr. JM Schlesser should have a penalty for that. But then again, we know that Amaury Sport Organization has very convenient interpretations of their rules sometimes, lol, with all of their events. That’s why I say next time, GDV should just show him the bumper!
Hey who gives out the petrol in this race? ASO? Heh.

Thomas is right: You can learn a lot from Robbie Gordon. Today he did eat some fiberglass of an unknown competitor who refused to hear the sentinel. Hehe! The Hummer seemd to suck the Mitsu into it’s front as he gently bumped him….
Keep on Dreaming Of Dakar!

Sometimes you can’t wait around for the great benevolent power-committees and bureaucracies to make their fair and just rulings on matters, lol. Tomorrow, I’ll bet that Giniel gets tired of the Sentinel, and befriends the good ‘ol low tech bumper method. Rock on, Giniel.

The bumper method seems be much better than the Sentinel, you’re right Thomas. Where are you or what do you do posting at 2:15 am …. aren’t you sleeping?
7 Helge Siems // Jan 11, 2007 at 10:28 am
@ Thomas: I guess today on the offpist is enough room to overtake without bumper or sentinel … But the method is cool. Robby Gordon demonstrated it yesterday.

One can’t be friend with everyone and I would be surprised if the ASO gives a penalty for that to a french guy, especially not Schlesser!
So let’s enjoy the bumper method.

Today Robby Gordon pushed several cars of the road. You can see the footage on Eurosport, where pushes the Toyota RAV4 #381 of AD Sport. The Toyota hit a rock and bended part of the suspension, which cost them 1 hour to repair. Gordon never used his Sentinel and latter claimed it was broken, which is impossible because it is checked everday before the start of the stage.
After the stage, AD Sport filled complaint with the organisation and they were not the only one. 4 other cars that were pushed off also complained and Gordon even drove into a motorbike! He was driving like a fool.
So expect Gordon to get a big time penalty for his eckless driving. This driving is not appreciated in the Dakar. Luckly nobody got injured today…

Thanks for the update Dries. Were did you get this information? Is there a place to get all the official decisions of A.S.O.?
11 Jutta // Jan 11, 2007 at 2:30 pm
I think both Schlesser and Gordon deserve a penalty - ignoring the Sentinel is definitely not what it’s intended for - it’s also there to make the rallye safer, which Robbie is certainly not when he keeps bumpin people off track - this is not NASCAR
(have to admit though that I can understand those situations - I’d love to bump some people on normal roads somtimes lol, plus it did look quite funny on Eurosport last night).

@Helge: the driver of the #381 Toyota RAV4 happens to be a famous Belgian artist and he has a audio blog on http://www.telenet.be/dakar (in Dutch).
They filled a complain by ASO yesterday evening, but the organisation has not taken a decision because they were very busy moving to Mauritania. AD Sport thinks they have a good case especially because the incident got filmed by the helicopter and was shown on French TV, Eurosport, … and because various other teams complained. Expect a decision this evening.
Personally I doubt Schlesser will get any penalty, because he is French and 2 time winner of Dakar.

Good point thee Dries, Schlesser has a big advantage being French, the Eurosport guys mentioned something in that direction last night as well.
14 GoROBBY!!! // Jan 11, 2007 at 7:11 pm
Robby twisted the knife today on you big whiners! Stage win! The Hummer and Robby are the real thing.
15 Thomas // Jan 11, 2007 at 7:35 pm
He’s an artist? Interesting.
16 Dries Schellekens // Jan 11, 2007 at 7:44 pm
Yes, he is. This is the 10th time he participates in the Dakar. His target for this year was top 20, but it does not help if some crazy American drives into your car.
BTW Gordon did not use the Sentinel system at all. This is what is designed for. To warn that a faster car is approaching and to make room. You don’t create room in Dakar racing by pushing…
17 Thomas // Jan 11, 2007 at 7:58 pm
There is a long history of bumping in Dakar, if drivers don’t move over fast enough when a faster car is coming through. Much Dakar video of that to be seen. I don’t think this was invented by Americans, lol. But hey, I don’t want to make this a nationalistic thing, I can only say that if there is a penalty coming, then Gordon will have to pay that price.
18 Dries Schellekens // Jan 11, 2007 at 8:00 pm
Okay. In the interview after todays win, Gordon states he got sanctioned for his driving style of yesterday. At the moment the interview is only available in French:
19 Thomas // Jan 11, 2007 at 8:12 pm
Thanks Dries, I just read that. At least he’s honest about making aggressive passes I guess, lol. I don’t know if that means he was assessed a penalty or not. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Looks like he was more careful today, but then again he was up with the faster cars.
20 Firedog // Jan 11, 2007 at 8:33 pm
GREAT JOB TEAM USA and Robby Gordon!!!! Stage Win!!!! All those other cars need a tall glass of “get the hell out of the way” in the morning when RG is starting behind them! If they don’t move then they get what they deserve….a big a$$ punt off the course, ha ha you guys just can’t take it, LOL!
21 Dries Schellekens // Jan 11, 2007 at 11:23 pm
There is high tech solution called Sentinel for this problem instead of resorting a stupid primitive aggression! You press a button the car in front confirms by pressing a button and moves out of the way.
22 Helge Siems // Jan 12, 2007 at 10:47 am
Warning but no penalty for Gordon.
