Ich habe jetzt einmal alle Bilder von VW, die das Team 317 (Robby Gordon und Dirk von Zitzewitz) betreffen, in die Bildergalerie gelegt. Vielleicht hat noch jemand Lust, die relevanten Bilder von Gettyimages für diesen Zweck zu kaufen …

Und die Teilnehmer nähern sich auf der 10. Etappe der Rallye Dakar 2005 dem CP 2 …

Übrigens sieht es auf dem IriTrack so aus, als wären Dirk und Robby wesentlich schneller gewesen, wenn Sie nicht Jutta hätten überholen lassen (müssen). Aber wir wissen ja andererseits, wie zuverlässig die Informationen vom IriTrack in diesem Jahr sind …

So wie es im Moment aussieht, fährt VW wohl ein taktisches Rennen, um den dritten Podiumsplatz nicht zu gefährden. Robby+Dirk haben sicher sehr genaue Anweisungen bekommen, hinter Jutta zu bleiben, um ihr notfalls helfen zu können. Die einzige Hoffnung weiter nach vorne zu kommen, sind sicher Probleme bei den Mitsubishis. Die Tour dauert ja noch etwas ……..

Die Zeiten an CP2 bestätigen mich in meiner Einschätzung. Differenz Alphand/Kleinschmidt: CP1: ca. 8Min., CP2: ca. 22Min.

Moin,
das muss ja deprimierend für die beiden Rennfahrer sein. Für Dirk ist es aber sicher nicht so schlimm, der macht sicher gerade ein kleines Mittagsschläfchen (er ist ja momentan sozusagen arbeitslos ;-)) ).

I’m, sure it is frustrating for them to wait for Jutta. To try and find the positive though, This will no doubt solidify their reputation as good team players for VW, in addition to being fast stage drivers. This will come back to help them at some point in the future.

I agree Thomas…it’s got to be hard on them, especially after a day of rest. Hopefully the plan will pay off for the VW team. Good luck to the entire team today!

Wow, the Mitsus just FLEW today. Mitsubishi Airlines. I wonder what went in those engines during the rebuild on the rest day?!

Die Etappe scheint es heute wirklich in sich gehabt zu haben. Nach den ersten 4 im Ziel kommt doch ein riesiges Loch, obwohl heute Vormittag im 2-Minuten-Abstand gestartet wurde.

Hi from the States;

In the USA, the competitors do not let their teammates go by if they are not faster. We feel it is not real competition. Racing is racing, and the fastest should be allowed to be fastest. But I am very happy for Robby! He is doing a great job, and shows why he is a “racer’s racer”! And thank you very much for the blog! It is very appreciated!

“Die Rallye startete sehr gut. Doch wir haben etwas zu viel Druck gemacht, hatten den Unfall und haben uns später festgefahren und dabei die Kupplung beschädigt. Die Dakar ist der härteste Wettbewerb meiner Karriere. Ich möchte noch einige Etappen gewinnen und einen Platz unter den ersten 15 erreichen. Und im nächsten Jahr möchte ich siegen.”

Am besten finde ich den letzten Satz
Mit dem Etappensieg wird es wohl schwierig, wenn sie “Stallorder” haben. Schade. But we will meet again next year

@amy the Dakar is quite different from “normal” racing - here it is important to help each other, especially for the sake of the team. Today Robby&Dirk helped Jutta when she got stuck in the sand and so she saved some 5 minutes, which could become valuable. Robby&Dirk are so far back it just wouldn’t make sense if they competed against Jutta.But as we can see they’re doing their best and who knows, next year it might be the other way round - you gotta be patient in racing
And btw: evey racer simply hates letting teammates go past, otherwise he/she wouldn’t be a real racer, would he/she?

To Amy: I am in the states, too. Even in road racing it is very common for a number 2 or number 3 team car, to be asked to set a “blocking” pace to hold off a competitor team, especially if the number 1 team car/driver has a chance at a season championship. Sometimes teams will even pit a faster #2 car out of sequence, to get track position a lap down, but nearer a championship points competitor. Very common even in NASCAR, it depends what is at stake overall. Same concept here, VW is doing whatever they can to protect Juttas 3rd place overall. They did not invest all this money into the team just to see Robby win stages. Having said all of that, I do agree that a “hero or zero” approach is what we always prefer to see. Robby has proven himself already in this event, he will get his chance to win it. Playing a ream role for Jutta has given me even more respect for him, and also the team.

Today’s comments from Jutta and Robby are up in the news section of the Dakar site. It looks like Robby/Dirk also stopped to help De Mevius, who was bleeding after his crash. Good thing. I can also tell from the comments that Robby is getting very tired of the Mitsubishi domination, and badly wants to do something about it. Also, if you pay attention to Peterhansel’s comments over the last 3 stages, he has not been so kind to Jutta or VW. We know Robby Gordon. He will take this personally, and before the end he will pick one stage in which to make a 110% effort aimed at trouncing Peterhansel thoroughly.

Not sure if this is the right place for this - so forgive me if it’s not - but with this interesting rallye and competition going on we should not forget that today one of the private motorcycle participants, 41-year-old Spaniarid Juan Manuel Perez, died of his severe injuries sustained during stage 6. This was his 4th Dakar and he had promised his wife it would be his last…how sad and hard the truth is

Jutta: I agree, this is a sad development. We can at least say that he perished doing something he loved. We should all be so lucky when our time comes. Does anyone have an email address for his team so we can send condolence messages?

Natürlich hast Du recht. Jeder Todesfall ist äußerst tragisch. Laut Eurosport ist Juan Manuel Perez der 44. Tote in der 27jährigen Geschichte der Rallye Dakar.
