Partial victory for Dirk and Giniel

January 7th, 2009 (MET) - by: Helge Siems - Comments

At 20:00 the clock ticker € writes on Sports: The winner Giniel de Villiers (VW), the 5th Stage of the Dakar Rally from Neque to San Rafael (506 km) ahead of his colleague Dieter Depping (VW), which in the end only 2:18 minutes to be missing his first triumph, and surprise husband Robby Gordon (Hummer), the only conclude in the dunes was convincing. New overall leader's Nasser Al-Attiyah (BMW) from Qatar, who takes over from Carlos Sainz (VW) at the top.

Today's stage was considered the most difficult the first week. Giniel de Villiers and Dirk von Zitzewitz have shown with the stage win, that they are among the top favorites. Particularly in the dunes on the last 40 km of the stage, the field seems to have now widened.

During the evening there is certainly a direct report by Dirk here in Dakar podcast .

Update: The current overall standings leader Nasser Al-Attiyah was evident in the problems with the engine temperature and thereby lost 15 minutes, just like in a press release of x-raid is to be read. The cooler was probably clogged with flowers: "It's great to be leading again, but it could have been so much better today," said Al-Attiyah. "I had to stop in the dunes for about 15 minutes down because the engine was overheating and the temperature would not go. I tried to unclog the radiator, but it was full of these flowers, not camel grass, just a special type of flower that was stopping the air flow. "

    # 305 - Giniel de Villiers (ZA), 1 Place leg / 2 Place overall
"Overall a successful day, which could have been even better run. At the beginning we have made it easy rather quiet, and then to attack towards the end more and more. This tactic has paid off, but unfortunately we have also captured a rim damage, as we caught a stone hidden in the sand. That cost us some time. Our first stage win us very happy, especially because it is the hardest step so far in this 'Dakar' was. "
