Robby Gordon und Dirk von Zitzewitz haben die WP beendet und derzeit die drittbeste Zeit. 
Später gibt es ein Update, sobald Dirk angerufen hat.
Update: Dirk geht es den Umständen entsprechend ganz gut. Er hat wohl noch ziemlich mit seiner Erkältung zu kämpfen und starke Kopfschmerzen.
Heute hatten die beiden zwei Reifenpannen und einmal den Weg etwas verloren. Sie sind dann einen Weg parallel zur vorgesehenen Strecke gefahren. Dieser ca. 5 km lange alternative Weg etwa 300 bis 400 m neben der offiziellen Strecke hatte ziemlich viele Steine / Geröll. Sie haben dadurch einiges an Zeit verloren. Jutta und Fabricia haben sich an der gleichen Stelle vertan und die vier sind dann da zusammen gefahren. Die Navigation war heute schwierig, es gab viele Dünen aber auch viele Steine, dadurch war die Piste teilweise nicht zu sehen. Alle bis auf die ersten zwei sind wohl den falschen Weg gefahren nach Dirks Einschätzung nach Betrachtung der Zeiten der anderen.
Vom Ausfall von Peterhansel ist vor Ort noch nichts bekannt. Dirk geht davon aus, dass der Mitsubishi 306 repariert wird.
Ryan und Niki sind vorgestern wie so viele wegen Kraftstoffmangel ausgefallen und mussten in der Wüste schlafen. Die beiden sind noch in der Wertung, haben aber einen “wahnsinnigen Ritt hinter sich”, weil sie gestern noch die Etappe von vorgestern fahren mussten, um heute rechtzeitig am Start zu sein.
Dirk und Robby scheinen sich erstklassig zu verstehen. Robby geht wohl unheimlich flexibel und professionell mit den ganzen Umständen um, die die für ihn neue Erfahrung “Rallye Dakar” mit sich bringt. Ein guter Fahrer ist er ja sowieso.
Update: Das offizielle Statement von Robby Gordon zur Etappe:
“Das war ein guter Tag, denn trotz zweier Reifenschäden sind wir noch Dritte geworden. Auch wenn es schade ist, nicht mehr um vordere Plätze fahren zu können, peilen wir natürlich gute Tagesergebnisse an. Die steinige Passage war heute sehr schwierig - einige unserer Gegner haben wohl einen Weg gefunden, um diesem Hindernis auszuweichen.” (Quelle: Volkswagen Presseabteilung)

“Das klappt bisher richtig prima, von Tag zu Tag besser. Noch lernen wir uns kennen, sowohl persönlich als auch im Auto. Aber ich glaube, wir kommen so gut miteinander klar, weil wir das gleiche Ziel haben.”Was war der schönste Moment der Dakar bisher?

“Der Sand und Staub. Zwei Tage lang war die Sicht durch Sandstürme extrem schlecht. Und die sieben Stunden Fahrt bei Dunkelheit auf der Marathon-Etappe waren auch eine gigantische Herausforderung. Doch positiv ist, dass der Race-Touareg ein so stabiles Auto ist. Das Team hat toll gearbeitet, das Auto ist seit dem Unfall wieder wie neu.”

Helge, thank you for this weblog. After finding it, I check it several times everyday. I hope Dirk is having a good time with Robby. Perhaps this is a racing relationship that can continue into the future.

@Kate und Stefan: Wie bisher noch nicht bestätigte Quellen melden, gibt es morgen in Atar einen Boxkampf zwischen allen drei Teams, die als Wasserträger für Jutta und Fabricia in Frage kämen.

Iri-track: Strange how it functions. If you play the stage 9 replay using Gordon against Peterhansel and Alphand, it shows Gordon leading most of the entire route. How can this be, if it is based on actual GPS tracking?

Thanks Helge. I can understand some of the iri-track site. I hope that in the 2006 Dakar the organizers can link the official race timing control GPS with the internet tracking. This may be wishful thinking, though. Perhaps you can help them with this challenge? Kidding. Are the checkpoint times for race control managed manually by officials? Or is is electronically controlled by transponder in the car? Sorry for technical questions. But, I never ever trust manual timing!

Interesting questions, Thomas. I don’t think that the race control is managed manually. And IriTrack: we discussed it this afternoon in this thread. Don’t ask, why they don’t use the official GPS-Data for our information …

Does anyone think it is possible for Robby and Dirk to make up 12 hours of time, or even half that amount, in the rest of the stages? Or does most of their hope for a decent finish hinge on the other cars falling out of the race?

Helge, This blog is great. Thanks so much for doing it. Here in the US, the DAKAR doesn’t have a large following. With Robby and Dirk doing such a fantastic job, hopefully that will change. I live in New York, so by the end of the race you should have fans joining in from south to north, and east to west. Thanks again for the timely updates.

Robby’s really doing a great job representing the States, I think he’s already surprised quite some folks over here.
I don’t really think it’ll be possible to make up so much time in the remaining stages, but it all depends on the performance of the other contenders as well of course, and in the Dakar almost everything is possible, you never know what’s gonna happen next…

Helge: Thanks for asking Klaus about the timing. I am shocked that it is manually done by race officials, that’s not good. I had a feeling. Officials sometimes have favorites, and make big mistakes, no? Watch the stage 9 replay on iri-track and tell me what you think. I wonder if Dirk keeps the stage split timing in the car as a double check?

Carrie, as great a driver as Robby is, I don’t think he could make up 12 hours on sheer driving ability alone, but all you really need is for a few of the front runners to have the type of problems you would expect in such a tortuous race and Robby and Dirk would be right back in it.

Hello Thomas, also the WRC Rallies use still manual recordings to the time-control for absolute security . Time measurement takes place naturally electronically.

Very well Thomas. The problem of the Rallye time measurement are the large distances. (Contrary to round distances running) There problems often are during the forwarding and transmission.
In addition, the drivers and teams control the times. They notice then also errors with the official measurement. On the other hand then a protest is possible. A jury meets then a judgement.

Great that everyone is following Dirk and Robby, even here in the Netherlands. Used te follow Robby in NASCAR, CART, IRL and SCORE and I am happy he came to Europe now. Didn’t know Dirk but he seems an OK guy after seeing him on TV. Great Blog, I keep checking asoft as I can. Grusse Jan.

Übrigens gute Besserung an den Erkältungs- und Kopfschmerz-geplagten Dirk!!! Es ist ja unter normalen Umständen schon unangenehm genug, wenn einem der Schädel dröhnt, aber so… Deshalb: Speedy recovery
